KK Wind Solutions to Deliver Largest Power Supply Unit to Date

KK Wind Solutions, a EUR 1 billion company owned by A.P. Moller Holding, is leveraging its experience as a leader in power converter systems for renewables and expanding into the green hydrogen industry. Converting renewable energy into green hydrogen means it can be stored and used in various industrial sectors which cannot easily be electrified. This contributes to the company’s mission of empowering a sustainable future through renewable energy solutions.

The company will deliver a Power Supply Unit tailored to the requirements of a 100 MW pressurized alkaline electrolyzer being built by leading electrolysis specialist Sunfire. KK Wind Solutions has designed the Power Supply Unit to meet Sunfire’s specifications. This will ensure the electrolyzer produces green hydrogen at the maximum efficiency while reducing operating costs.

René Balle, Chief Commercial Officer of KK Wind Solutions: “As a leading manufacturer of power converters and control systems for the wind industry, combined with the support of our long-term owner, we have the necessary technology and expertise to deliver technology crucial to support the growth of the green hydrogen industry. This project strengthens our partnership with industry leaders like Sunfire and underlines the importance of delivering solutions customized to plant specific electrolyzer and grid requirements.”

From prototype to scaled up power supply unit

In 2023, KK Wind Solutions delivered two Power Supply Units to support Sunfire’s 10 MW pilot electrolyzer. Each unit consisted of a 5 MW rectifier and a transformer. The learnings from the successful program were essential to scale up the Power Supply Unit to 10 MW for full-scale green hydrogen production.

As part of the order, the company will provide 10 customized Power Supply Units, each comprising transformers, rectifiers, AC connections and cooling units. Additionally, the company will provide comprehensive services and support at every stage of the plant’s lifespan. This includes detailed engineering, supervision of installation, commissioning and maintenance.

In total, the order from Sunfire will be the biggest Power Supply Unit for a green hydrogen system to be delivered by KK Wind Solutions, underlining the importance of the project for the company.
