US Battery Manufacturer Expands Award-Winning Sustainability Educational Campaign
Battery demand has quadrupled in the energy sector since 2020, according to the International Energy Agency. And today, batteries are at the forefront of decarbonization, electric vehicles and homes, smart grids and renewable energy – and many companies’ and governments’ climate and sustainability goals.
“Low-carbon, low-waste energy storage is critical to solve the climate crisis – and protect our air and water,” says John Connell, Vice President of Crown Battery’s SLI Products Group. “But this rapid growth created an investment boom – and an increase in misleading marketing and environmental claims that don’t reflect scientific facts. For instance, some batteries touted as ‘green’ are built using newly mined raw materials, and end up in a landfill 95% of the time.” (Source: Chemical & Engineering News)
In 2022, Crown Battery released the industry-first Energy Storage Sustainability Fact Book – to help separate battery facts from greenwashing. Written in plain English, the Sustainability Fact Book helps businesses and homeowners reach their sustainability goals while reducing their environmental footprints and operating costs. And in 2023, Crown Battery expanded its educational efforts with its Zero Battery Waste Guide, which offers a proven, profitable path to boost battery sustainability and decrease emissions – both for consumers and businesses.
The Zero Battery Waste campaign distills scientific findings from US EPA studies and independent lifecycle audits, along with Crown’s collaborations on Department of Energy pilot programs, Fortune 500 warehouses, and Central Asia’s largest microgrid.
The Zero Battery Waste campaign shares straightforward sustainability keys to compare batteries’ recyclability, waste, and lifecycle impacts, including:
-
Why some batteries are 99% recycled – but others are 95% landfilled (sources: US EPA and International Energy Agency)
-
What is Zero Waste, and how does it affect you?
-
Battery selection strategies that decrease waste, emissions, and conflict zone mining
-
5 avoidable mistakes that kill any batteries early
-
Checklists to compare battery sustainability, engineering, and manufacturing – for enhanced lifespan
“Reducing emissions and battery waste helps our environment and gives you a competitive edge – regardless of which battery type or manufacturer you choose,” says Hal Hawk, President and CEO of Crown Battery. “All battery makers have an environmental and ethical duty to educate the public about sustainability. And with the right educational tools, you can go green and save green too. That’s good for everyone.
The Crown Battery Zero Waste campaign won Honorable Mention for the Battery Council International’s Amplify Award for informing, educating about, and promoting energy storage.
