When applied, the water content in the formula cools the fire, allowing the solids to reach the source and form an encapsulating barrier preventing oxygen from reaching the fire and stopping any thermal runaway. Shortly after the fire has been extinguished, the material is safe to handle.

The first step required working with the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA) to develop the guidelines and standards for the lithium-ion cells. Corletto drafted and submitted language to the NFPA for a new classification of fires – ‘L’ for Lithium Battery Fires based on the technology developed with the encapsulating agent. This language is in the final approval stages and will likely dictate safety protocols across America regarding lithium. 

“First, I had to tackle the regulation, which none existed, until now,” Corletto said. “Identifying and standardizing the guidelines that will be regulation moving forward has been a top priority, ensuring individuals and families will be protected from now on.
