Carbon DC Acquires Elywhere North America to Accelerate North American DC Grid Deployments for Commercial Real Estate
Carbon DC, a leader in DC-based grid and EV charging systems, announced the acquisition of Elywhere North America (Elywhere NA), the North American operation of Norwegian EV charging technology innovator Elywhere AS. This strategic merger positions Carbon DC to rapidly expand its energy optimization solutions across North America while addressing critical electrification challenges in multi-unit buildings and hotels.
Carbon DC will benefit from Elywhere AS’s extensive experience deploying battery-assisted fast charging solutions across Europe, bringing proven deployment strategies and operational expertise to the North American market. Carbon DC will operate under the Carbon DC brand, with operations in Vancouver, BC, Canada, and Portland, Oregon, USA.
"This strategic move will allow us to focus on solving a major electrical infrastructure problem for customers with assets exposed to rapid electrification," said Erlend Wilhelmsen, who will continue as CEO of the combined company. "Elywhere's successful track record in Europe, particularly in demanding locations with limited grid capacity, provides us with valuable insights as we scale our solutions across North America."
The combined company will leverage Carbon DC's energy optimization software to enhance deployment strategies refined through Elywhere's European operations. This integration eliminates costly electrical service upgrades while providing faster and more reliable EV charging for multi-unit buildings.
"Large residential buildings need stable and scalable EV charging solutions. Without battery systems for load management and time shifting, existing buildings' AC infrastructure simply cannot support growing demand," said Erlend Wilhelmsen. "Our DC-based approach delivers faster charging while protecting the building’s electrical systems. We believe that within 10 years, DC electrical infrastructure will be common in most new buildings as properties, vehicles, and more efficient heating and cooling systems are developed and integrated with batteries and connected to both traditional grid and renewable energy such as solar."
The transaction accelerates Carbon DC's growth trajectory, focusing on the residential and mixed-use commercial real estate sector. The merger will enable Carbon DC to apply lessons learned from Elywhere's European installations to similar grid-constrained environments in North America.
The acquisition was completed as of June 30, 2025. Financial terms were not disclosed.
