AZA Battery Joins the Zinc Battery Initiative to Champion Sustainable, Low-Cost Energy Storage Solutions
The Zinc Battery Initiative (ZBI), the voice of the zinc battery industry, is pleased to welcome AZA Battery to its rapidly growing membership. Belgium-based AZA Battery has designed a unique zinc-air battery with applications in both mobility and stationary storage.
Formed in 2008, AZA Battery is building a pilot manufacturing facility near its Brussels headquarters. Because AZA uses low-cost raw materials, it forecasts total manufacturing cost at scale will fall under $30 kWh, far below the average manufacturing cost of lithium-ion and other battery chemistries. In addition to their safety, scalability, and sustainability, these novel batteries provide a four to eight hour or longer discharge duration and are ideal for both stationary storage and long-range electric vehicles.
"Welcoming AZA Battery into the Zinc Battery Initiative marks a significant milestone,” said Dr. Josef Daniel-Ivad, manager of ZBI. “We anticipate AZA’s affordable, high-performing batteries will make substantial inroads providing energy storage as well as e-mobility, and we are excited to partner with AZA to promote the advantages of zinc batteries.”
AZA Battery’s Co-Founder and CEO Didier Guillonnet added “We are honored to join ZBI and collaborate with other developers and suppliers to advance the market for zinc batteries. AZA batteries will play a role in long duration energy storage applications as well as in long range mobility, including e-scooters, e-buses, forklifts, and fleet vehicles.”
ZBI has grown its membership by more than 60% this year, welcoming zinc battery developers and manufacturers as well as material suppliers. The program champions zinc-based technologies through its work with the Department of Energy, webinars, networking, education outreach, and media campaigns.
The full list of ZBI’s members includes Eos Energy Enterprises, IMR Metal Powder Technologies GmbH, Nippon Shokubai, ZincFive, Zinc8, Salient Energy, Urban Electric Power, e-Zinc, Redflow, Enzinc, Enerpoly, ZAF Energy Systems/AEsir Technologies, Inc., Imprint Energy, Printed Energy, Zelos, Hilabs, Octet Scientific, EverZinc, Bruggemann, Diamonchem, Grillo, and Zochem.
