Sunrun Expands Solar and Home Battery Offerings to Florida Power and Light Service Territory

Sunrun Inc. (Nasdaq:RUN), the nation's leading home solar, battery storage and energy services company, announced it is expanding access to its Brightbox rechargeable solar battery system to serve more parts of Orlando and Tampa. Sunrun's expansion into Florida Power & Light's (FPL) service territory means that more people can benefit from Sunrun's solar and home battery offerings.

Sunrun began providing solar and battery storage to people in Florida in 2017, with Duke, Tampa Electric, and Orlando Utility Commission service territories. As of May 2020, people in the Orlando and Tampa area within FPL's service territory can now access reliable, clean power with Brightbox from as little as zero dollars down and at a consistent, low monthly rate.

Sunrun's Brightbox system, which features Tesla Powerwall batteries, will be especially important during this time of year, as Floridians prepare for and weather another record-breaking hurricane season. Clean energy produced from rooftop solar panels is stored by Sunrun's Brightbox storage system throughout the day. During a power outage, Brightbox powers the home with backup electricity. The battery is charged by the sun every day so that people can keep their lights on even during multi-day outages.

Floridians can take control of their electricity thanks to Florida's established net metering system, which is a billing mechanism that enables people to use the energy their system produces and also use credits from when solar power is sent back to the electricity grid to be used by their neighbors.

Last year, Floridians experienced multiple outages caused by severe weather, including during Hurricane Dorian and Tropical Storm Nestor. Rather than use polluting fossil fuel generators for backup power, Sunrun customers powered through by taking advantage of their rooftop solar and battery storage systems for clean backup power.

"People need to feel confident that they'll have power when the grid goes down," said Lynn Jurich, Sunrun's co-founder and CEO. "Our Brightbox rechargeable solar battery system helps families keep the lights on and makes sure their food stays fresh if the power goes out. We're pleased to be helping even more people in the Sunshine state take control of their home energy with Brightbox, and are excited to continue expanding access to clean, reliable power across Florida."

As Americans continue to shelter in place due to COVID-19, the U.S. Department of Energy estimates that people could experience electricity bills 25% higher than normal in parts of the country as the temperature heats up this summer. This is on top of already higher electricity use due to people spending more time at home. Sunrun's solar as a service product offering helps people take control of their electricity bills and have a reliable and predictable source of energy.

With Sunrun at the forefront of this solar and battery breakthrough, Florida is paving the way to a clean, resilient energy future, with the potential to save Florida ratepayers billions of dollars in traditional utility upgrades by providing reliability in the form of energy generated and stored at home. Home energy resources like Brightbox enable homeowners to better protect themselves against power outages. By expanding access to Brightbox, Sunrun is giving Floridians the power to choose a cleaner, more reliable electricity system for their homes, and for their state.
