Wind Energy Generation by State

When you think of Texas energy, you probably think about oil derricks and natural gas pumps and the like. But wind turbines increasing have become part of the landscape of the Lone Star State - so much so that Texas leads the nation, by far, in electricity generated by wind. A ChooseEnergy.com analysis of the latest data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration shows just how much the state dominates.

Texas produced nearly 30 percent of the nation's electricity generated by wind in May. That's well more than triple the amount from the next state, Iowa. The top states for the month, measured in thousand megawatt hours, can be found here.

Nationally, electricity generation from wind decreased about 4.6 percent from April to May. Of the 37 states with significant wind generation, 28 showed losses during the period.

Total wind generation increased 8.5 percent nationally from May 2019 to May 2020. Generation increased by the greatest percentage in South Dakota.
