Powin Energy's Stack225 Achieves the Highest Standard in Product Safety

Global leader in designing, developing and manufacturing high-value, cost-effective, safe, and scalable battery energy storage solutions, Powin Energy Corporation (Powin) announced that its Stack225 product passed the UL9540A test certification. Testing took place on June 1, and the full report was released this week.

Under the recently updated National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 855 regulation, battery racks must be spaced three feet (92cm) from each other to decrease the risk of fire propagation, which results in a reduction to the site energy density of ESS installations by over 50%. After meeting UL9540A test standards, the space requirement between racks can be waived by the local Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJ).

The UL9540A is a test method consisting of cell, module, and rack safety evaluations in the event of a failure mode by thermal runaway. It measures the characteristics of thermal runaway, as well as the amount and composition of gas during thermal runaway.

Powin's product passed the UL9540A test with no flame and no propagation from cell to cell or module to module within the Stack225. In doing so, Powin's lithium iron phosphate-based chemistry has achieved the highest standard in product safety, meaning the batteries do not need additional fire-proof barriers and fire retardant materials added to the module design to be safely installed and utilized. NFPA fire-related permitting requirements have placed extreme emphasis on passing this testing standard, implementing large permitting restrictions for systems that are unable to meet it.

Part of Powin's Stack family of products, the Stack225 is used for 2-hour duration systems, offering a 10-year, one-full-cycle-per-day performance guarantee. Powin's proprietary Stack products can perform a wide variety of in front of the meter, behind the meter, and microgrid applications to meet today's evolving energy storage needs, yet they are designed to be flexible so that as priorities shift, the battery applications can be adapted to meet the needs of future use cases.

Geoff Brown, President of Powin said, "We are thrilled that our Stack225 product passed this critical safety test. Meeting such a stringent industry standard is a testament to both our selection of a safe cell and our unique module design that naturally prevents fire from propagating, and we look forward to continuing to provide our customers with reliable and safe battery energy storage systems."
