Countdown to the Hydrogen Young Scientist Award Ceremony 2025

A total of 42 researchers from 34 universities, academic institutions and research centres across 15 countries are in the running for the Hydrogen Europe Research (HER) Young Scientist Award 2025. Italy, Spain and Germany lead the way in the number of candidates.

Since 2018, the HER Young Scientist Award has been the reference prize for under-35-year-old researchers working on hydrogen. The competition rewards the achievements of early-career scientists and encourages emerging talent in the hydrogen and fuel cell sector.

Laureates will be announced on 24 November during the EU Hydrogen Research and Innovation Days 2025, organised by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership, the EU’s key programme to accelerate the deployment of clean hydrogen technologies in Europe.

The 2025 competition will reward studies, applications and analytical investigations in the four categories that reflect the key pillars of the Clean Hydrogen Partnership:

      Hydrogen production

      Hydrogen storage and distribution

      Hydrogen usages

      Hydrogen cross-cutting activities: safety, regulations, codes, standards and education

In addition, one scientist will be recognised as ‘Best Researcher of the Year’. Each of the five winners will receive €1,000 and a trophy. Laureates are selected by the members of the HER Executive Board. The award ceremony will be presented by HER President Luigi Crema.

Hydrogen Europe Research will cover the winner’s travel and accommodation for the EU Hydrogen Research and Innovation Days (Brussels, 24–25 November), offering journalists the opportunity to meet and interview the laureates in person.

In a joint ceremony, the winners of the Clean Hydrogen Partnership Awards 2025 will also be revealed on 24 November. These awards celebrate collaboration and achievements across the hydrogen value chain in five categories: Best Success Story and Best Innovation (elected by public vote), Best Outreach, the European H2Valleys of the Year and Best Women in H2 Innovation award, prizing excellence in research and innovation.
