Kingspan Commits to Net-Zero Energy with EWT Wind Turbine Technology

EWT Direct Wind has delivered a DW52 900kW wind turbine at the manufacturing site of global industrial insulation business, Kingspan, at Holywell in North Wales. Marking a key milestone towards meeting Kingspan's pledge to become a net-zero energy company by 2020, this project minimises the company's environmental impact whilst cutting grid energy consumption and energy expenses.

EWT's 900kw DW52 model wind turbine, identified as the technology best suited to Kingspan's needs, will ensure that 90% of the power produced is consumed on-site when production lines are operating at full capacity, nearly 24-hours a day. In quieter work periods when the turbine is producing more power than needed, Kingspan will feed the excess into the national grid at a wholesale rate, helping to minimise potential losses.

By matching Kingspan's energy needs to suitable turbine technology, the project will reduce site overheads for the business, while providing long term security against rising electricity prices that will increase business competitiveness, and improve sustainability. To fund the development and construction of the wind turbine, Kingspan agreed a long-term energy supply contract with the developer Sirius Renewables Group, for the lifetime of the wind turbine.

The turbine was designed and manufactured at EWT's factory in the Netherlands under strict quality and technical control guidelines, before being installed on site by EWT technicians who continue to monitor and provide service support to the wind turbine 24-hours a day.

The project was delivered during a 3-day factory shutdown, with all project partners working together to ensure that installation could be completed without affecting factory operations.

"We are pleased to see Kingspan take the lead in the self-generation of renewable energy, setting them well on the way to achieving net-zero energy by 2020," said Rob Van De Veerdonk, Chief Marketing Officer, EWT.

"EWT are committed to helping heavy energy users like Kingspan reduce their carbon footprint and energy costs. With the right project partners and consultancy support from EWT, business leaders can develop an energy strategy that will benefit their company and the climate in the long term."
