Survey: Californians are Most Likely to Consider the Environment Before Every Purchase

Vivint Solar, Inc. (NYSE: VSLR), a leading full-service residential solar provider, released new findings from its 2018 Environmental Consumer Survey exploring the environmentally conscious - or "green" - behaviors and mindsets of California residents.

Among its notable findings, the survey found that Californians are the most eco-conscious shoppers in the country. Over 2 in 5 Californians (42 percent) consider the environment before every purchase, making them the most likely residents of any state to do so.

"Californians care deeply about doing their part to protect the environment," said Vivint Solar CEO David Bywater. "Look no further than their commitment to clean, renewable energy - California leads the country in solar adoption and was the first state to mandate solar panels on new homes. Across the board, Californians set the standard for environmentally conscious living."

Additional key findings of the survey include:

  • Many Californians are looking to expand beyond gasoline-powered cars. Golden State residents are eager to embrace automotive innovation. Approximately one-third of Californians are interested in purchasing an EV in the next five years.
  • Not all Californians would be utterly devastated if their state went underwater. Rising sea levels due to global warming threaten to eventually flood cities around the world. More than 3 in 4 Californians (77 percent) would be most sad to see their home state sink into the ocean. Among all respondents, one quarter of Americans would be most devastated to see California go, making it the second-most missed state behind Florida, which is at serious risk of having the bottom third of the statesubmerged.
  • Californians are most likely to still believe stereotypes about the diets of green consumers. 2 in 5 California residents assume green consumers are vegan or vegetarian, yet the vast majority of green consumers (88 percent) eat meat.
