B&W MEGTEC Enters Strategic Partnership for Lithium-Ion Battery Manufacturing Technology

Babcock & Wilcox MEGTEC (B&W MEGTEC) announced it has signed a strategic partnership agreement with Magnis Resources Limited and Charge CCCV (C4V) to provide its GigaCoater wide-web coating line for manufacturing lithium-ion battery electrodes for use in future Magnis and C4V manufacturing projects.

"The lithium ion-battery production market represents one of B&W MEGTEC's best growth opportunities," said Kenneth Zak, Senior Vice President B&W MEGTEC. "Our proprietary double-sided coating and drying technology implemented in the GigaCoater has the ability to provide significant operational and cost benefits to lithium-ion battery manufacturers compared to traditional coating equipment and we are pleased to be working with Magnis and C4V, leaders in materials and manufacturing process innovation, for the future production of batteries for the Electric Vehicle and Energy Storage Systems markets."

Under the strategic partnership agreement, a works program has commenced for the specification of B&W MEGTEC's GigaCoater line for use in future Magnis and C4V projects, including the Imperium3 New York lithium-ion gigafactory.

B&W MEGTEC's GigaCoater utilizes a proprietary two-sided coating system, developed to provide high-volume, low-cost production of battery electrodes which can produce up to 3 gigawatt hours (GWh) of electrode per year on average. Key benefits of the GigaCoater technology compared to traditional, single-sided electrode coating equipment include 50 to 70 percent less floor space, lower energy consumption, a wide-web that reduces the number of coils needed to be handled, simplified material flow, and greater use of automation.
