Hazards Of Unplanned Detonation Still Posing Offshore EOD Threat, Says 6 Alpha

Specialist UXO (unexploded ordnance) risk businesses, 6 Alpha Associates, has warned that despite stringent legislation, best practice guidelines from the Construction Industry Research and Information Association (CIRIA) and a mature industry, the risks posed to Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) operations remain significant.

In partnering with equipment provider, ECS Special Projects Ltd., 6 Alpha is investing in the latest offshore technology to increase safety and further reduce active risks in the controlled removal and disposal of UXO.

With offshore infrastructure developments at an all-time high in European waters, spurred by significant offshore wind development and country interconnectors, so too is the demand for specialist UXO firms to deal with the legacy of dropped bombs and munitions dumping that has been endemic in European waters for 100 years.

The risks to UXO mitigation operations remain significant, with the technology used in the disposal process a fundamental part of maintaining safety standards.  To avoid any instances of premature detonation, 6 Alpha is investing in a mechanical detonation system.  By using a mechanical system 6 Alpha will completely circumvent the risks posed by using electronic equipment, which may cause an unplanned detonation or uncontrolled explosion.

Under the terms of the agreement 6 Alpha will become the first UK EOD business to invest in a non-electrical detonation system.

By moving to the system 6 Alpha will be able to have greater command and control of EOD operations, whilst additionally ensuring the highest levels of safety are attained during planned detonation operations in accordance with the CIRIA guide.

Secondly, the simple but rugged deployment mechanism means it can be launched not just from the shore but also from platforms including ships and RHIBs (Rigid Hulled Inflatable Boats).

'Offshore UXO disposal is a complex operation carrying an inherent level of significant risk, and there have been some unwelcome industry near misses," said Simon Cooke, Managing Director, 6 Alpha Associates.

"By partnering with ECS and investing in its class leading equipment we believe that UXO disposal risks may be further mitigated; moving the industry into a new safety paradigm in accordance with the CIRIA offshore guide.  We would encourage offshore energy developers and operators to ensure that their specialist contractors are also at the cutting edge of this shift in minimising risk to EOD operations," he said.

Steve Randall, Operations Director, ECS said, "As specialist developers of the newest technology in this field, we appreciate and respect 6 Alpha's commitment to ensuring safety and the best service offerings available. We look forward to continuing our relationship with the firm in future."

6 Alpha Associates will be attending the AWEA Offshore event in New York on 24th and 25thOctober.  To meet with the business at the event, please contact [email protected]
