WGL Energy Awarded Wind Power Contract with Pennsylvania Department of General Services

WGL Energy Services (WGL Energy), a WGL company, announced that the Pennsylvania Department of General Services has signed a three-year contract for Green-e Energy certified wind renewable energy certificates (RECs) sourced from wind farms throughout the United States. The Pennsylvania Department of General Services (DGS) helps PA state government operate more efficiently, effectively and safely by providing shared services to support the business operations of all agencies of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Demonstrating its commitment to environmental sustainability, DGS will match almost 400,000 megawatt-hours (MWh) of its electricity load with national wind RECs under the contract which ends in 2018. This is equivalent to taking more than 55,000 cars off the road for one year. DGS will be increasing the match of RECs to the electricity usage of its executive agencies from 10 percent to 30 percent over this 3-year contract.

"We are proud to support the Pennsylvania Department of General Services with our wind RECs, and help drive its on-going strategy to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and embrace sustainability programs," said Sanjiv Mahan, president, WGL Energy.

As a leading supplier of renewable energy and green products, WGL Energy is a two-time recipient of the Environmental Protection Agency's prestigious Green Power Supplier of the Year Award. In addition to significant wind RECs supply, WGL Energy is active in other areas of renewable energy with more than 170 megawatts (MW) of distributed generation under contract in markets across the United States.
