HELUKABEL to Showcase Medium-Voltage and Fiber-Optic Cable Solutions at Leading US Wind Show

HELUKABEL, one of the world’s leading cable manufacturers, will be highlighting its medium-voltage aluminum and fiber-optic cable capabilities at WINDPOWER 2016 being held in New Orleans, LA on May 23 – 26. This show brings together wind industry innovators, thought leaders and policy makers from all over the world to chart wind energy’s course into the future. The American Wind Energy Association (AWEA), who organizes the show, says that by 2030 wind energy has the ability to generate 20% of U.S.’s energy supply and will be a major solution for states implementing the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Clean Power Plan.

In order for the power to be used it must be transferred to the grid, which requires the medium-voltage cables such as HELUKABEL’s MV-90/MV-105 ALUMINUM. The shielded version is primarily used for power and distribution circuits in industrial and commercial installations, such as those found in or near wind turbines, where line to ground fault current are within shield capabilities. These cables are permitted to transmit voltages ranging from 5,000 – 35,000 V, and are allowed to be directly buried in wet or dry locations as permitted by National Electric Code (NEC).

The non-shielded MV-90 ALUMINUM is limited to 2,400 V per NEC, and are used in industrial and utility applications, located in dry locations, in accordance with NEC. Both cables are UL 1072 listed.

To monitor a turbine’s efficiency and optimize its performance, this highly automated piece of equipment requires extensive use of data and communication cables. Fiber-optic cables solve data communications problems over long distances, which is ideal for equipment as tall as a wind turbine. These types of cables are ideal for data transfer between wind turbine components, both internally and externally. Available fiber-optic cables include Fast Bus for optimum blade positioning, and Condition Monitoring System (CMS) for measuring and analyzing a turbine’s operating performance.

HELUKABEL’s range of medium-voltage aluminum and fiber-optic cables, along with other cable products suitable for wind turbine operations will be on display at booth 4723 at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

The HELUWIND cable and accessory portfolio provides solutions for the entire turbine – rotor tip to turbine base. HELUKABEL’s main focus is on nacelles, cable-loops, down towers and tower controls/transformers, including medium-voltage applications. HELUWIND cables provide superior performance in climate conditions from -55°C up to +145°C for CCV and offshore applications. They have been internationally approved by UL, CSA, CE, and VDE, are WTTC rated, and have passed the FT4 flame test. Additionally, copper and aluminum conductor options are available to provide cable system solutions that balance performance and cost efficiency.
