The Canadian Wind Energy Association (CanWEA) is pleased to note that Hydro-Québec’s latest request for proposals for the production of 450 MW confirms the highly competitive nature of Quebec’s wind energy industry.

With the three selected projects totalling 446.4 MW at an average price of 6.3 ¢/kWh, Quebecers will benefit from energy produced at the best possible price. Even taking into account transportation costs that bring the total average price to 7.6 ¢/kWh, these projects provide better value than the large hydroelectric projects currently under construction.

“We are glad to see Quebecers reaping the benefits of competition leading to highly advantageous prices,” said Jean-François Nolet, Vice President of CanWEA. “It shows the economic and financial potential of the industry for Quebecers, especially considering that the originally planned commissioning dates will be met despite the delays that occurred this fall as part of the request for proposals. This announcement is also great news for the communities that will benefit from these wind energy projects.”

This end to the proposal process confirms not only the strength of the wind energy industry and of the supply and manufacturing chain already established in Quebec, but also its future potential. It also shows the relevance of wind energy as the Quebec government works on the next energy policy. “The result of this latest request for proposals shows that, more than ever, Quebec must continue to show leadership in the development of its wind energy industry.
