Advancing Energy Efficiency Strengthens Economy, Creates Jobs

“As President Obama prepares his State of the Union Address, the Alliance to Save Energy notes that energy efficiency strengthens the nation’s economy, spurs job growth and reduces dependence on imported energy while saving money for each and every American household and business.

“Even as new energy technologies continue to emerge, efficiency remains the quickest, cheapest, cleanest way to enhance energy independence, extend domestic energy supplies and protect the environment.

“Initiatives such as the bipartisan Shaheen-Portman bill – S. 1000, or the Energy Savings and Industrial Competitiveness Act – would increase energy efficiency across  our economy by strengthening building energy codes, providing financing options for manufacturers and requiring the federal government to improve its energy management.

“Several states are taking the lead by updating building energy codes.  And from appliances and lighting to fuel economy, federal standards allow constituents to win by building in energy efficiency to their purchases. Manufacturers win, too, by developing products for a single set of federal guidelines rather than a patchwork of state requirements.

“Recent Energy Information Administration estimates project that following an assumed economic recovery, higher energy efficiency standards for appliances and vehicles will cause per-capita energy consumption to decline over the next 20 years and beyond.

“The Alliance to Save Energy looks forward to working with the president and Congress to ensure that energy efficiency delivers the jobs, savings and economic growth that will contribute to America’s success story in 2012.”
