GWO Names Vice Chair for North America Committee

Global Wind Organisation (GWO), the industry group responsible for safety training standards for more than 90,000 of the world’s wind energy workers, selects Kristy Abel, Director of Environmental, Health and Safety for Avangrid Renewables, as vice chair of the North America committee.

“I’m looking forward to partnering with Kristy as we drive to meet our aggressive goals for the year ahead, build our membership and take steps to continue to tailor GWO standards to the North America region,” says Wesley Witt, Chair of the GWO North America committee and Head of Quality Management and Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) for Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy.

Abel joined the GWO North America committee team in 2019, and she also is a judge for the GWO Safety & Training Awards this year. The GWO Safety & Training Awards, to be held in November 2021, is designed to recognize teams of instructors and staff from a worldwide network of more than 370 training providers.

In her current role for five years at Avangrid Renewables, Abel is a skilled health and safety and technical training leader. She has proven expertise in strategic planning, change management and project administration. She also brings a combination of experiences gained in the renewable energy and electric utility industries.

Prior to joining Avangrid Renewables, Abel was Manager, Regional Operations for New York State Electric & Gas and Safety Compliance for Rochester Gas & Electric. She has a bachelor of science degree in marketing from State University of New York College, Oswego: a master of science in environmental, health and safety management from Rochester Institute of Technology: a master of business administration from Universidad Pontificia Comillas in Madrid, Spain; and a master of business administration from Strathclyde Business School in Glasgow, Scotland.

Avangrid Renewables is part of the IBERDROLA Group, which joined GWO in 2019, and is a leading renewable energy company in the United States, owning and operating a portfolio of renewable energy generation facilities.
