Mercom Communications India, a subsidiary of global clean energy communications and consulting firm Mercom Capital Group, has released its data report, India Solar Market Leaderboard 2021. The report covers market share and shipment rankings across the Indian solar supply chain for 2020.
During the calendar year (CY) 2020, India installed 3.2 GW of solar power projects across the country. India also had a robust pipeline of 47.5 GW of utility-scale projects under development at the end of 2020, with another 24.5 GW of tenders pending auction.
The solar market leaderboard reflected a volatile year for the industry dominated by disruptions from the COVID-19 pandemic. With the exception of two categories, market share leaders changed in seven categories compared to 2020.
Large-scale solar installations in 2020 accounted for 78% of the total solar installations with 2.5 GW. Solar accounted for 48% of new power capacity additions in 2020.
The report reveals that the top ten large-scale project developers accounted for 69% of the projects installed in 2020. Adani was the top utility-scale developer in 2020.
Companies offering engineering, procurement, construction (EPC) services saw a large number of projects move into 2021 due to delays caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, land acquisition, and evacuation issues, among other issues. Sterling & Wilson was the top EPC provider for utility-scale solar in 2020, followed by Tata Power Solar.
Rooftop installations totaled 719 MW in 2020, a 35% drop year-over-year due to COVID-19 related challenges. Tata Power Solar had the largest rooftop installations in CY 2020, followed by Fourth Partner. In 2020, the top ten rooftop solar installers accounted for 66% of the rooftop solar market.
In India’s Budget 2021, the customs duty on solar inverters was increased from 5% to 20% to encourage domestic production. However, several international companies already have their solar inverter manufacturing units in India. Sungrow was the top solar central inverter supplier in 2020. Huawei topped the list of string inverter suppliers, followed by Growatt, GoodWe, and Solis.
LONGi Solar was the leading module supplier to India in 2020, and in terms of cumulative shipments, Trina Solar topped the list. The top ten module suppliers, including several Indian manufacturers, accounted for over 68% of the market in 2020.
There were several new companies in the top 10 list of market leaders in solar mounting structures. SNS Corporation was the top supplier of solar mounting structures in 2020, followed by Purshotam Profiles, Strolar and Ganges Internationale Solar. Arctech Solar and NEXTracker were the top suppliers of solar trackers cumulatively as of December 2020.
Open access installations in India saw a 56% increase in 2020, due to the increasing interest from corporates buying open access projects. Rays Power Experts, Amplus Solar, and CleanMax were the top open access developers as of December 2020.
Robotic cleaning systems continue to make inroads in India. Solabot Technologies was the top supplier of solar robotic cleaning systems in CY 2020.
