Rapid shutdown systems are necessary to provide an easy way to de-energize a solar array’s DC conductors during emergency situations including fires. These systems help reduce fires and improve the safety of first responders on the roof during a fire. First included in the National Electric Code (NEC) in 2014, Rapid Shutdown Systems must be installed on buildings to reduce the shock hazard for emergency responders in accordance with 690.12(A) through (D).
