De Nora Announces Cooperation with Primus Power to Bring New Cost-saving Energy Storage Technology to the Clean Energy Market

De Nora, a global leading supplier of electrochemical technologies, is pleased to announce cooperation with Primus Power, Silicon Valley-based provider of low-cost, long-duration, fade-free energy storage solutions. The companies have been collaborating for more than five years, modifying, testing, and verifying De Nora's proprietary DSA ® electrode formula to bring critical improvements to clean energy applications. Now they are bringing technological enhancements to Primus Power's EnergyPod flow battery and further accelerating commercialization of Primus Power's energy storage systems.

With almost a century of electrochemical technology leadership and three R&D locations, including De Nora Tech in North America, De Nora's expertise in manufacturing titanium-based, precious metal oxide coated anodes and catalysts has enabled advancements in many electrochemical processes with applications including energy storage/production, chemical production (chlor-alkali and others), cathodic protection, metal electrowinning, surface finishing, water treatment, and many others.

The energy storage market is growing rapidly. Analysts such as Bloomberg New Energy Finance are projecting a market over $44 billion thru 2024. Primus is targeting the largest portion of that market with their long duration battery. With increasing customer shipments, a growing backlog and a recent injection of new capital, Primus is well positioned for success. De Nora is growing their North American electrode capacity with a new 110,000 square feet manufacturing facility that can support this growth. De Nora's seven other electrode manufacturing sites overseas will help Primus as they expand in international markets.

Charles Schultz, business development manager, De Nora Tech, says, "I am excited to continue to strengthen our relationship with industry leader Primus Power while achieving a central position in the booming clean energy storage market. At De Nora, we are fully committed to contributing to a better world, from our work to improve energy storage efficiencies to advance treatment of water around the world. We hope to duplicate the success we've achieved with Primus and others, becoming the catalyst for significant market change by modifying our proprietary electrodes for a specific industry and application."

Mark Collins, vice president of operations at Primus Power, is quoted as saying, "We look forward to deepening our relationship with De Nora. Their long experience with titanium electrode manufacturing and global capacity can enable us to expand quickly."

Early on, Primus Power recognized that mixed metal oxide coatings on titanium electrodes perform better over graphite in lifetime and in catalytic activity. De Nora verified this advantage in zinc bromide and other flow cell chemistries in independent studies conducted by a globally known university. By selecting this type of electrode design, Primus can achieve high energy density at low cost and long life. With this in mind, Primus turned to De Nora for their electrode supply.

De Nora purchases the most titanium globally aside from the aeronautical industry and have years of experience in forming, welding and processing the metal in a variety of custom forms for their customers. This extensive background will help Primus as they look to improve the technology of their electrodes and lower costs. The Primus patented EnergyPod is a zinc bromide flow battery that eliminates expensive and life-limiting components - membranes/separators, graphite electrodes, and complex plumbing - that spoil the economics of other flow batteries. Unlike lithium-ion based systems, EnergyPod has no fire concerns and energy capacity does not fade over time.
