Advances in battery technology coupled with reduced prices are making large-scale solar energy storage both feasible and economical. Navigant Research predicts that by 2020, 29.4 GW of new energy-storage capacity, primarily batteries, will be in place worldwide, with utilities deploying 9,000 MW. Navigant also estimates that energy storage for grid and ancillary services will grow from 1.1 GW in 2016 to 21.6 GW by 2025. As battery technology continues to progress, the installation of new microgrids will provide more clean energy production and commercial-scale battery storage opportunities.
