Wood Group Supports 1 GW Sweihan PV Project to Financial Close

Wood Group's clean energy business has supported one of the world's largest PV projects to financial close.

The Sweihan Solar PV Plant, which is located in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, will provide power to the Abu Dhabi Water and Electricity Authority (ADWEA) under a 25-year PPA at a record-setting low price. Once constructed, the 1.177 GW project will be world's largest single utility-scale solar PV plant, at one of the most competitive prices seen to date in the solar PV industry.

Wood Group's clean energy team was appointed by the developer, a joint venture between Marubeni and JinkoSolar, as technical advisor to the group of local and international lenders. As part of the scope of work, the renewable energy and grid integration experts also delivered an independent energy yield assessment prior to the tender bid submission, and will also provide construction monitoring services during the two-year construction period.

Thomas Houlding, senior renewable energy consultant at Wood Group - clean energy, said: "We are delighted to have been involved in supporting the Sweihan Solar PV project to financial close and congratulate the developers and project partners in achieving this significant milestone. It has been a valuable experience to be involved in a landmark project of this enormous scale, especially with parties who are pushing the boundaries of PV plant development to help maximise the technology's potential."

The financing agreement for the Sweihan Solar PV Plant was closed in May 2017, with the start of construction announced shortly afterwards. The plant is due to be fully operational by April 2019.
