Oman's First Wind Farm Project to be Constructed

Oman is to have its first wind farm, courtesy of Abu Dhabi's renewable energy development agency Masdar.

Zaywa reported that this wind farm will have a 50-megawatt capacity and is being developed by the partnership between Masdar and the Rural Areas Electricity Company.

According to the Chief Executive Officer of the Rural Areas Electricity Company, "Things are moving ahead, and hopefully in the coming period, we will see this materialize in the form of formal agreements leading to the start of its development," said Engineer Saleh Nasser al Rumhi. "The project, which had been on hold for a period of time, has been reinitiated with Masdar moving ahead with the original 50 MW capacity plan."

This marks one of many firsts for Masdar. The agency announced in July that its partnership with international energy company Statoil has succeeded in launching world's first floating offshore wind farm that will be sited off the coast of Aberdeenshire, Scotland.

The proposed project will house up to 25 wind turbines that will power 16,000 homes in the Thamrait Area.

An estimated $125 million has been invested into this venture.
