Energy Department Opens Job Search for Geothermal Technologies Office Director Position

The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, U.S. Department of Energy, is seeking applications for the permanent position of Director to lead a national program in the development of innovative geothermal technologies that advance geothermal's role in the U.S. energy portfolio.  The program includes enhanced geothermal systems, hydrothermal systems and exploration, low-temperature technologies, and analysis.

With a technical portfolio of projects spanning across national laboratories, industry, and academia, current initiatives include play fairway mapping for geothermal systems; additive value streams through mineral extraction of geothermal brines; and a novel field observatory for research into new mechanisms for rock stimulation and geothermal reservoir creation. The position also includes responsibility for a recently established Department of Energy initiative in subsurface science and engineering that crosscuts multiple sectors including oil and gas and environmental management, which has an overall theme of adaptive control of subsurface fractures and fluid flow.

The mission of the Geothermal Technologies Office (GTO) is to accelerate the development and deployment of clean, domestic geothermal resources that will promote a stronger, more productive economy, support a cleaner environment, and improve energy security. This abundant resource generates energy around the clock and has the potential to supply more than 100 GWe of electricity – roughly one tenth of America's energy demand. By optimizing the value stream for electricity production and cascaded uses, the Office aims to make geothermal energy a fully cost-competitive, widely available, and geographically diverse component of the national energy mix.
